Hauptwerk des Philologen Lodovico Ricchieri (lat. Caelius Rhodiginus; 1469-1525). Seinerzeit ein geschätztes Nachschlagewerk, Rabelais beispielsweise soll es für seine Schriften eifrig benutzt haben. Mit Widmungsvorrede des Autors an Jean Grolier. - Erschien erstmals 1516 bei Aldus in Venedig. Hier die zweite Ausgabe in der ersten Druckvariante (von 2), mit der Porträt-Titelbordüre.
EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Schweinslederband mit reicher Blind- und Rollenprägung (Porträtmedaillons) über Holzdeckeln mit 2 Messingschließen und 8 Messing-Eckbeschlägen; Vorderdeckel mit Prägung "I C" (Johannes Cellarius) und Datum "MDXXX". Folio. 34 : 23 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 3 figürlichen Holzschnitt-Bordüren von Urs Graf, 2 Holzschnitt-Druckermarken und zahlreichen tls. figürlichen Holzschnitt-Initialen. - KOLLATION: 40 nn. Bll., 882 S., 1 Bl. - ZUSTAND: Nur vereinz. gering fleckig, am Kopfsteg tls. mit schmalem Wasserrand, Rücken an den Enden mit kl. Fehlstellen. Insgesamt sehr gut erhaltenes und dekoratives Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Titel am Oberrand mit Psalm und eigenhändigen Besitzeintrag von Joh. Cellarius: "In te proiectus sum ex utero de ventre matris meae Deus meus es tu. Joh. Cellar." Einbandprägung ferner mit dessen Initialen und Datum 1530. - Vord. Vorsatz mit zeitgenöss. Kaufvermerk "Emptus Vitebaergae ii fl." (kl. Randabriß mit Käufername). - Titel mit altem Wappenstempel (unleserlich).

Magnificent Froben print in contemporary wooden boards. Encyclopedia on the science and culture of antiquity by L. Ricchieri, here the second edition (first 1516). A very fine and partly annotated copy from the estate of the Protestant theologian and humanist Johannes Cellarius (1496-1542). With 3 fine woodcut borders by Urs Graf, 2 woodcut printer's devices and numerous partly figured woodcut initials. The richly blindtooled binding with Cellarius' initials "I C" and date 1530. - Only few pages with minor staining, upper margin partly with small waterstain, spine ends chipped, else a very well-preserved and attractive copy. - Provenance: Title with inscription and signature by Joh. Cellarius, front flyleaf with contemp. purchase note, title with old armorial stamp (illegible).
