PROVENANCE: Estate Elisabeth Schulz neé Ziegler (obtained as present from the artist)
Private collection Northern Germany (through inheritance).

On a quest for new and unusual forms of expression, Ziegler uses the experience he had gained with Expressionism in this composition and combines it with a symbolic duct. The Christian motif is reduced to the two heads of Mary and Jesus. Richard Ziegler does not illustrate the pained mother in her relationship with her son, but their etherealness gained through the recognition of a triumphant love. In this work Mary is not mother, rather sister and bride. The mask-like faces emphasize Ziegler's inention to depict a relation that has already eluded reality. Richard Ziegler, who was familiar with many styles and techniques, is able to express a materiality in paintings that is underlined by an irrational coloring. The spontaneous style suggests a quick making, which, void of narrative elements, guides the observer's eye to the essence.
