His long stays at the Baltic Sea inspired Lyonel Feininger to some of his greatest seascapes. Different from other artist of Expressionism, who saw the sea as an untameable element, Feininger sought to depict the calmness of the vast water surface on which he often placed just one boat. The lonely sailor doing his rounds on the infinite sea. The India ink drawing's demure graphic lines add a special charm to the romantic subject. Lyonel Feininger had a strong fancy for these contrasts, as they determined the subjects of most of his works. [KD]
