Porträt eines Hafenarbeiters. Um 1930.
Charcoal and color chalk drawing, partly wipe.
On firm wove paper by Schoellershammer (with embossing stamp). 64 x 48.8 cm (25.1 x 19.2 in), the full sheet.
Verso with female nude in same technique.
Expressive drawing with strong line management.

The expressive portraits by Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler are based on an unmatched graphic power. Additionally, an increase analysis of the human soul, which especially determines the imagery of the charcoal drawings, becomes obvious. The bad living conditions in the 1920s may have added fuel to the fire of her artistic will. As far as statement is concerned, Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler's drawings are on par with her most acclaimed contemporaries. It was the fate of female artists in those days to be second to their male colleagues as far as public recognition was concerned. An imbalance that began to change slowly in the first years after World War II.
