With broad figurative title border in woodcut, woodcut portrait of Christian III., King of Denmark, 45 large woodcuts in the text after Erhard Altdorfer (2 fullpage, 6 rep.), 56 small glossary woodcuts by the master MP as well as numerous calligraphic woodcut initials. Lubeck, J. Richolff 1555. Contemp. calf over wooden boards with rich blind- and rolltooling. (Allegories, heads etc.), blindtooled center panel and 2 brass clasps. 4to. 8 unnumb., 291 (recte 290) numb., 17 unnumb. ll. (lacking last blank).Mencke VIII, 1. - Adams R 423. - BM STC, German Books p. 735. - Bruun IV, 267. - Not in VD 16. - First Danish edition of Reynard the Fox, the first edition in a Scandinavian language of all. Extremely rare, no copy found in JAP and the ABPC. - Translation based on the Low German Rostock edition from 1539 and contains, just as this one, a Protestant commentary. The illustrations follow the expressive woodcuts by Erhard Altdorfer, who largely contributed to the popularity of Reynard the Fox. The smaller, so-called glossary woodcuts mostly show medieval classes and professions as well as allegoric figures. - The woodcut portrait show the Danish reformation king Christian III. - Somewhat waterstained and with small stains in places (first and last ll. stronger), with slight isolated marginal blemishes, title with rebacked split, reinforced on verso of lower margin, first text l. with ownership entry erased by an old hand. Binding cover restored and mended in edges at the beginning of the 20th century, endpapers renewed as well as first and last quire reinforced in places of gutter, 1 outer joint brittle. Rare Danish edition of the Reynard, even the first editon in a Scandinavian language. The text is based on the Low German Rostock edition from 1539. With fig. woodcut title border, woodcut portrait of the portrait of King Christian III, 45 large woodcuts by E. Altdorfer (2 full-page, 6 repeated) an 56 smaller woodcuts by the Master MP. Contemp. blindtooled calf over wooden boards, inner panel with the text "inobediencia unibus pecca", rollstamps with heads and allegorical figures; 2 brass clasps. - Some waterstaining and partly some staining (first and last leaves stronger), here and there with marginal defects, first text leaf with crossed-out ownership inscription by old hand. Covering restored at edges, endpapers renewed, first and last quire strengthened in gutter, 1 joint cracked.
