Doppelbild (verkehrt), Himmel und Erde. 1972/73.
Aquatec on canvas.
Twice signed, dated and titled (once upside down), as well as inscribed with the technique "aquatec" on the reverse. 150.5 x 130 cm (59.2 x 51.1 in). [CH].

• In terms of the colors' intensity and tonality, this is an outstanding work from the 1970s .
• The artist intended two possible ways of hanging the work.
• Part of a German private collection for over 40 years.
• Following Antes' development of the "Kopffüßler" (cephalopod) at the beginning of the 1960s, the central motif in the artist's oeuvre has been subject to constant change.
• In the work offered here, Antes deconstructs his own invention, showing the head not in profile but almost frontally and detached from the outsized legs and feet.
• Works created in 1972/73 are in important museum collections like the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki and the Sprengel Museum, Hanover
.

"Figure is painted man [..]. A system of organisms and limbs, dimensions and directions. [..] I turn, bend, break and stretch the figure until the image falls off the canvas, stands in front of or behind it, something long known, familiar since long ago, the canvas as membrane."

Horst Antes on his figure, undated typescript, quoted from: Ex. cat. Horst Antes. Malerei 1958-2010, Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, Cologne 2013, p. 13.
