Between 1927 and 1929, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff traveled to the Ticino several times and found lasting inspiration for his watercolors and paintings in the local landscape and idyllic villages. Not only Ascona and the landscape around Lago Maggiore found their way into his works, but also numerous other quaint villages such as Losone, Cavigliano and Arcegno. Their houses were once exclusively made of stone from the region, and even today, the buildings, streets and winding alleys appear unchanged, as if time has stood still since Schmidt-Rottluff's visit around 100 years ago.

In this watercolor, the artist skilfully depicts the architectural forms in a characteristic manner using water-based watercolors before outlining them with ink and adding subtle individual details. Delicate, glazed areas of color are drowned out by the rich, powerful coloring in the center of the depiction, which Schmidt-Rottluff uses in combination with a rich play of light and shadow, a strong depth effect and subtly placed architectural details to create an atmospheric scene.
