This lithograph is a wonderful document of the artist's mode of operation. The work remains in the artist's studio for several months. Initially, he makes a version in black, later Chagall makes a second version by adding colors, eventually he finalizes the work in a last step so that the final state, the state this work offered here is in, meets his artistic requirements.
