Ducks as a subject for his art occupy a central position in Alexander Koester's entire creation. In late-impressionist manner and with great virtuosity he captures the play of light and shade on the ducks' plumage and the reflections on the water. The pictures of ducks embedded into the landscape, of which our atmospheric work is a wonderful example, laid the basis for his reputation as "Enten-Koester" (Duck Koester). The artist made similar autumnal works with reed on a lakeshore in his adopted home Klausen around 1900/1905.
