Cui Xiuwen belongs to the new generation of ascending Chinese artists that have already attained a certain international reputation. After she had completed her studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing she was at first mostly occupied with painting, however, just after a short while she turned to video art and photography, onto which she would put her artistic focus. Many of her works revolve around topics such as sexuality, gender questions and the position of women in Chinese society. By means of digital procession she combines traditional motifs from Chinese culture with Western elements, creating works that possess a very individual aesthetic. In the work "One day in 2004, N° 2" she multiplies one traditionally dressed and rouged Chinese schoolgirl who presents herself in various lovely poses, to a whole school class. Besides the socio-critical aspect she also attains a very clean and almost graphic image effect. With works like this the artist is represented in renowned international museums like the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Tate Modern, London. [SM].
