Published in magazine "La Caricature", no. 138, 27 June, 1833, plate 287.
PROVENANCE: Private collection Baden-Württemberg (with collector stamp on verso, not in Lugt).
Dr. Clément Prunelle, physician and politician, was mayor of Lyon and representative. Being a strong supporter of the July Monarchy, he served king Louis-Philippe who ruled after the revolution in July 1830. Dr. Prunelle was not least for his physique mocked by many caricaturists. The lithograph‘s title with his abbreviated name “Le Prune“ (the prune) also alludes to that. His hair over his eyes mean that Prunelle didn’t see things clearly. A sculpture that Daumier made is known by the title “Le Dédaigneux“ (The Condescending). When he died he had a debt of more than 200.000 Francs. [CB].
