Much like his father, the famous English painter of mountain landscapes Edward Theodore Compton, an excellent alpinist who completed numerous first ascents, Edward Harrison Compton was passionate about the alpine landscape and the stunning, ever-changing natural beauty of the mountains. After completing an apprenticeship with his father, Compton attended the School of Arts and Crafts in London. On numerous journeys to Switzerland, Northern Italy and Tyrol, the artist focused on the beauty of the pristine mountain forests, the brooks and the expansive alpine meadows rather than the dramatic high mountains which had been his father’s main motif. In this painting, the viewer looks up at the Königspitze, at 3,851 meters the second highest peak in the Dolomites’ Ortler range. Controversy still surrounds its maiden ascent by Stephan Steinberger in 1854; a first recognized ascent was completed by English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett and his companions, along with Swiss mountain guides Christian Michel and Franz Biner, in 1864.
