• An expressive composition that draws its distinctive strength from vibrant colors in combination with a lucid and floating brushwork.
• Apparent contrasts united: the geometric rigor of the composition with the spontaneous gestures of the vibrant brushstrokes.
• A fine example of Förg's masterful adaptation of art historical traditions: in addition to Blinky Palermo, Förg references the American postwar art of Barnett Newman and Brice Marden.
• In 2014, the Museum Brandhorst in Munich presented the first posthumous retrospective exhibition, followed in 2018 by retrospectives at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Dallas Museum of Art.
• In 2023, the Long Museum in Shanghai presented Günter Förg's work for the first time in a major solo exhibition in Asia

The interplay of color and brushwork characterizes Günther Förg's works. In contrast to Hard-Edge painting, his color fields take on vibrancy through broad brushstrokes, which energize the monochrome surfaces and set them in motion. In our work from 1991, Förg painted glazing black brushstrokes vertically across a yellow surface. Through this stylistic device, he combined the pure effect of color with a classic painterly component. The overlapping broad brushstrokes create an impression of spatiality and a structured pictorial surface. In Günther Förg's paintings, the conceptual construction often recedes behind a process-oriented creativity. Through the exploration of formal structures and motifs in a wide variety of materials and media, as in the serial development of a theme, Förg's attitude and method become evident: it is not the autonomous individual work that comes to the fore, but the process of creation, which becomes the message” (Ingrid Rein, in: Günther Förg, exhibition catalog, Fridericianum Kassel, Stuttgart, 1990, p. 10).
