Among Edward Theodore Compton's most impressive motifs are his views of high alpine glaciers, particularly those of the Swiss Alps. In this watercolor, Compton depicts the attractive contrast of the high alpine mountain world with impressive color intensity. Warm green and brown tones dominate the foreground, while behind them the mighty snow- and ice-covered cliff of Piz Roseg with the Tschierva glacier towers imposingly. In the morning sky, the towering clouds, between which the peak rises, create a dramatic lighting effect. The Piz Roseg, like many of the peaks in the Bernina group in the Swiss canton of Graubünden depicted by Compton, was first climbed in 1865 and belongs to the repertoire of the mountaineer-painter Compton, both in artistic and athletic terms, like many other peaks in this region.
