Private collection (acquired from aforementioned in 1979).

In 1962 Graubner began to experiment with sponge impressions that led to the "Schwammgouachen" (Sponge Gouaches). These gouaches, which occupy the same position in the artist's oeuvre as the cushion pictures, are made with paint-drenched bolts that Graubner pushes onto paper. The colors superimpose one another in ever new layers, forming a dense center around which the outer zone becomes increasingly transparent. The work group is characterized by a strongly meditative character and is an early document of Graubner's intentions: the evolvement of the color, free from any individual subjectivity. The work offered here is one of the very rare large-size sponge gouaches.
