In October 1991, more than 3,000 oversized umbrellas are simultaneously stretched in California and Japan at sunrise. For the scant, dry landscape in California Christo chose yellow, for the water-rich and intensively agricultural nature in Japan he chose a blue fabric. With this major project Christo wanted to reflect the intercultural similarities and differences in lifestyle, the landscape’s seasonal colors and lights of these two valleys. The numerous drawings created in the preparation of the project are evidence of Christos reflection of Asian art. Clearly visible, he uses typical elements such as "bold views, unusual image sections form densities in selected, few details" all in the spirit of decorative Japanese landscape painting. (Hans Dieter Erbsmehl in: exhibition cat Christo und Jeanne-Claude, Galerie Pels-Leusden, Berlin 1995, p. 52). [CB].
