Sol LeWitt was born in Hartford/Connecticut in 1928. In 1945 he began to study at the Syracuse University in New York and attended the Cartoonist and Illustrators School in New York City afterwards. Having completed his studies he was active as a graphic artist and worked for the Museum of Modern Art where he met Robert Mangold, Robert Ryman and Dan Flavin. Sol LeWitt taught at several art schools, such as the Museum Art School and the New York University. In 1962 Sol LeWitt began to do first murals and floor works as well as sculptures in geometric forms. He was inspired by, among others, Constructivism, classic Modernism, the Bauhaus and the Dutch architectural movement "De Stijl" and continued these ideas by acting out several variations in his works. The aim of these variations was to achieve an equalization of the possibilities. The artwork’s expressiveness should only relate to itself and nothing else apart from that. As of 1965 he also made modular works with spatial structures by integrating grid-like constructions and cubes. His artistic activities went hand in hand with his publications: "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art" from 1967 and "Sentences on Conceptual Art" from 1969 lay the basis for the term Conceptual Art. Sol LeWitt died in New York on 8 April 2007. [JS]
